Shaft

What is a hoistway or a shaftway?

Space in which car and counterweight travel and which is limited by the shaft pit floor, shaft walls and shaft ceiling.

It is normally made up of brick or concrete walls. It saves people from being harmed by moving parts within the shaftway.

Further material for hoistways: Steel and glass.

If the elevator travels within a shaftway that is only partially covered; the open space up to a distance of 1.5 m from moving parts (such as car or counterweight) is also part of the hoistway.
